The romance with Qatar is one of the most bizarre relationships in Washington since the end of the Cold War. It's the one remaining of the Sunni Arab countries sponsoring Islamic radical groups, from ISIS to Hamas, and supports a network of front organizations and personalities to promote radical Islamic ideology. It works to undermine regional peace-seeking initiatives like the natural gas consortium in the eastern Med and the Abraham accords. The other Sunni Arab countries, including the heavyweights of Egypt and Saudi Arabia, have renounced these destructive activities and actually banned Qatari-sponsored front groups like CAIR.
Putting ourselves in debt to Qatar and turning off our own ability to produce cheap, abundant natural gas must be some bad dream or drug trip.
It seems to me if the planet was being depleted of energy, and you wanted to hoard as much as you could for yourself, you would leave the last 3 miles of a pipeline unfinished and finish it at a later date (when there would be much less population). I'm not buying for 1 second the elites are that dumb or incompetent, or don't understand the ramifications.

A few come to mind but you give no concrete examples. A terror group to some may be freedom fighters to another. The IRA was funded by Irish-Americans. The ANC and Nelson Mandela were designated a terror group and terrorist respectively by your own government. I can go on until Christmas. You state and I quote, “…forcing us to make unseemly alliances with despots…. Emir of Qatar”. You already have an alliance with Qatar. Qatar hosts the largest USA base in the Middle East. Have you been to Qatar? I have. You (USA) have made “unseemly alliances” with despots and continue to do so. Just to rattle a few off: Chile (Gen Pinochet); Saudi Arabia (ibn Saud dynasty); Iran (Shah Pahlavi); Egypt (Mubarak and now al Sisi); Greece (Greek Colonels junta); Bahrain (Khalifa); China (Chaing Kai Sek). Honestly, I can go on until next Christmas. The point is this: you (USA) are not holier than thou so stop preaching and pontificating. Can’t afford to throw stones when you are in a glass house. Stick to what you do best.
The world is a deep complicated mess that has a lot of history and reality all mixed in, it's relatively easy to be on a morale highhorse but incredibly difficult to be remotely consistent about it in practice, of course, this is not to say that these topics shouldn't be brought up or seriously discussed, but there is a general concern especially for those of us living outside the US that every once in awhile the US/West comes around and break stuff on the morality argument, then quickly realize they can't fix it and then just leaves an even worse pile of mess behind and blame the victim.
But yes, the plight of the SEA migrant workers are well known to many of us living in Asia, where most country either export them or employ them, (except for the PRC for the most part. other than some migrant workers sneaking in from Vietnam ) . While obviously things aren't as dire in Taiwan/ HK / Japan / Korea as the most extreme stories coming out of the Gulf states, there's plenty of pretty ugly stories to go around as well, Hong Kong while rich in nominal terms, suffers from a dramatic shortage in actual living space, and this causes a lot of stories of things like the SEA maids sleeping on balcony type of stories.
The blame also should go almost equally to the government of the country of origin of these workers, who has often been totally happy with using their migrant worker as geo political bargaining chips, but rarely pursuit the rights of said workers with the same vigor.
Unforunately, despite mostly being democracies, these states have also not particularly reflected the will or interest of their people either. Be they India or Phillipines of Indonesia or Thailand
Great article, and I agree with the big picture point being made. To be fair, the MVP decision isn't directly attributable to the executive, it has to do with an activist judiciary. That judiciary has been formed partly by progressive politicians, but the problem goes deeper, into the academic and legal cultures that train and acculturate lawyers and select judges from their ranks.
